JANUARY 2008 EVENTS CALENDAR

Urban Walk with Walk Wise, Drive Smart
Thursday, January 3, 2008

On the first Thursday of every month, a guided walk will be held in various designated neighborhoods around Hendersonville.  Location and time depends on the weather, guest guides, and the whim of our walkers.  To find out where we'll be, contact the local project manager Sam Lovelace at 864.457.6166, or www.walk-wise.org. Walks are open to everyone.  We invite you to come enjoy some healthy exercise, beautiful neighborhoods, and give us your input on future improvements to walking routes in the Hendersonville area.  Each walk is gentle, between 1 and 2 miles, and usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours.  Walks are cancelled in the event of severe weather.

19th Annual Hendersonville
Christmas Tree Recycling Project
Saturday, January 5, 2008 - 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. - Jackson Park

Trees can be left at the park beginning the day after Christmas or bring them this day, when they'll be chipped. Bring bags to take home free mulch! Make this your seasonal gift to the earth.

Christmas trees will be chipped into mulch, a fragrantly fresh pile of chips will be available for free gathering, and hot apple cider will be served by volunteers with the Environmental and Conservation Organization (ECO), coordinator of the event. More than 1,670 trees were chipped last year ... keeping this valuable resource out of the landfill and producing piles of useful product.

Beginning the day after Christmas, trees may be dropped off at a designated site in Jackson Park near the covered picnic area.  Christmas tree vendors are encouraged to bring leftover trees to the site. Trees will be chipped on January 5. No balled trees, wreaths or greenery with wire will be accepted. (Please note: oriental bittersweet is a highly invasive species in the area and any wreaths made of it should be disposed of inside a garbage bag with your curbside trash to keep the seeds from spreading.)

Hendersonville city residents may leave their Christmas trees at curbside, where the trees will be chipped and counted as part of the recycling project.

During the Saturday event, ECO volunteers will direct traffic, help unload trees, and assist participants who gather mulch. Those planning to collect mulch should bring boxes or bags.

The annual event is coordinated by ECO in cooperation with Henderson County Parks and Recreation, Hendersonville Public Works, and Henderson County Solid Waste Department. The event will take place rain or shine.

For more information phone the ECO office at 692-0385.
